Presskit Update Guide

This document provides information on how to update the DoPresskit websites for the following

  • Mega Cat Studios
  • 8Bit Legit

Presskit Links

Steps for updating the Presskit information

Both Presskit sites use the same version of DoPressKit template that can be downloaded here

Accessing the files in the web server

The Presskit website files are hosted in a web server that can be accessed via SFTP using an FTP client like Filezilla (can be downloaded here for Windows or Mac) .

  1. Download and install Filezilla or any FTP client.
  2. Connect to the server with the following details:
    1. Host – IP address or hostname of the server
    2. Username – username that has access to read and update files
    3. Password – password for the user
    4. Port – SFTP port (22 or leave blank)
  3. Press Quickconnect (Or save the details above for easy access)

Presskit Files Directory

The files for Presskit are available inside the htdocs folder once you log in to FTP

Inside htdocs folder are the root directory for each Presskit website. In the screenshot below, those folders are presskit.megacatstudios.com and presskit.8bitlegit.com

Inside the root directory (e.g. presskit.megacatstudios.com), navigate to the public_html directory to go to the web files to be edited.

Presskit files to be updated

DoPresskit was made as a general template for creating presskit websites that can be easily modified by using the default structure (but can still be modified by updating the code of the template).

The main file to be edited are the data.xml files which reside at the root directory and at the directory of each project/game to be added

Home Page Data XML

The data.xml file in the root directory is the only file to be updated to make changes to the home page (unless there are custom changes that need to be made in the template). The structure of the XML file should not be changed, otherwise there could be issues or errors that might be encountered when the website is loaded.

The data.xml has the following data structure (the names in parentheses are the actual name of the xml keys)

This template can be modified/customized depending on the need for the data to be displayed in the website.

Downloading, updating, and uploading the files

The easiest way to update the files (specifically the data.xml) is by downloading them from the server, updating it locally in the computer, and uploading it back to the server, replacing the file with the updated one.

  • Downloading can be done by simply dragging the files from the server (right panel) to the local PC drive (left panel)
  • Updating the file can be done by using any text editor. Just make sure to still save it as an .xml file. Also, make sure to have a back-up just in case things go wrong.

Testing and deployment

Since the server that hosts the live website is the one to be updated, any changes to the server files are automatically visible to the website. Please make sure to check the data.xml file before putting it back to the server.

Other Details

This guide is just one of the ways to update the files, though this is not the safest so make sure to check the files before uploading it to the server. The recommended way to update the files is by using Git repository to push, pull, and deploy changes to the server (tested locally first).
